The next ILADD Hiking Club hike is scheduled for Sunday, October 15th at Shades State Park near Waveland, Indiana. We will meet at 12:30 p.m. for a picnic lunch (bring your own sack lunch, we will provide bottled water and cookies) and begin hiking promptly at 1:00. We will hike for approximately 2-3 hours or about three to four miles. The trails at shades are great, and it should be very pretty with the fall colors. We have hiked at Shades State Park twice before (May 16, 2021 and October 23, 2022), and everyone enjoyed the hike (which includes seeing a part of the Pine Hills Nature Preserve). ILADD Hiking Club is for adults with developmental/intellectual disabilities who can walk at least 2-3 miles, up and down hills, on uneven ground, on unpaved trails. All hikers should bring their own water bottle. It is recommended that everyone bring a change of shoes and socks for after the hike because it may get muddy if it rains within a day or two prior to the hike. Also, make sure to bring a hat and sunscreen if sunny weather is forecast. Since it is mid-October, be prepared for cool weather and dress accordingly. It is too early for an extended weather forecast, although the average mid-October high temperature in Indiana is around 55 to 59 degrees. If we need to postpone the hike due to excessive rain or severe weather, we will email or call you two hours or more before the hike is set to commence.
REGISTRATION REQUIRED: The hike will be limited to the first 20 registrants. It is very important that you let us know you will be participating, so we can notify you if we need to change our plans due to bad weather or other circumstances. Register by emailing us at teasterday@iladdinc.org of your intent to go on the hike by September 14, 2023. If you have not previously completed the registration forms for the ILADD Hiking Club, you must complete and submit those forms by September 14, 2023. DIRECTIONS: The entrance to Shades State Park is on County Road West 800 South a short distance west of State Road 234 near Waveland, Indiana. Upon entering the park, you will pay the $7 per vehicle entrance fee (if you would like to be reimbursed for this entrance fee, please give your receipt to Tom Easterday). Then take the first right turn followed by the first left turn to get to Shelter B (Dell) where we will meet. It takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes to go from Zionsville to Shades State Park.
COVID PRECAUTIONS: Please do not participate if you have a fever or any symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to anyone with COVID-19 within the five days immediately prior to the hike. We recommend that anyone participating in the hike have been vaccinated and received a booster shot.
